Bye-bye e-junk!

On Saturday, we–along with 3,000 other area residents–took our electronic waste to the Kansas Coliseum to be recycled. Ryan loaded his car with 5 desktop computers, 2 laptops, 3 monitors, 3 printers, 1 scanner, 2 sets of computer speakers, 2 sets of stereo speakers, 2 keyboards, and 1 joystick. Once we got to the pavilion it only took 5 minutes to unload all the items, but it took us 2.75 hours to get to the entrance and through the line! Ryan’s mom Julie was in line ahead of us and she tipped us off to the long line so we went the back way and saved 1.5 hours.

We suspect that the organizers of this event had no clue that there would be such a huge turnout. A local news article said they unloaded 300 cars per minute. We hope they continue to do this in the future, but employ an *industrial engineer* to figure out how to decrease the wait time (idling cars = CO2).

Hey Guys, that is so cool! Glad that you were able to properly dispose of your e-waste.
I followed your link to the news artilce and saw the name of the journalist. I went to high school with the girl who wrote that article. I couldn’t believe it! Talk to you later

300 cars per minute? Can this be right?

Suppose they operated for six hours, at 300 cars/minute: 6 * 60 * 300 = 108,000 cars. Operating for 8 hours, they would cover half the population of Wichita! :)

Wish I could have given you one of our computers to recycle–we don’t have an easy place here to take it.
