We’re back for another school year with 2nd & 3rd grade Bible class. Yay! This year we’re doing an Old Testament review of sorts to show the children that the Bible isn’t just a collection of random stories; rather, it is one story about God’s love for us through Jesus.
This quarter we’re focusing on Abraham and the promises God’s made to him, how Jesus was part of those promises, and how we’re heirs to those promises through Jesus. I’ve written 13 lessons on Abraham, each focusing on a different multiple intelligence: storytelling, science, geography, culture, cooking, etc.
Pictured is our second workshop- science. We were scientists and used the scientific method to question the promise made to Abraham in Genesis 22:17-18 by attempting to count the stars and sand. We started by using Google Earth to identify familiar constellations and then zoomed in closer to count the stars (on Wednesday night we actually went outside to count the stars). We then brought in a small tub of sand to see if we could count the grains of sand. After that we searched in Exodus and 1 Chronicles to count the descendants of Abraham, and followed that by going to the CIA’s World Factbook to look at the world’s population and religion estimates. In the end we determined that God kept his promise to Abraham that his descendants would be more numerous than the stars or sand because we cannot count all the stars, sand, or descendants. There are too many!
