Ryan discovered a fantastic restaurant when he was at grad school in Bowling Green, Ohio. Tony Packos (pronounced pack’ ohs) is a local place in Toledo where they serve Hungarian hot dogs with their own secret hot dog sauce, Chili Mac with spicy chili and spaetzle, and award-winning pickles. You may have heard them mentioned by Corporal Klinger in a few episodes of M*A*S*H (Jamie Farr was from Toledo).
For Ryan’s birthday this year I mail ordered a Tony Packos hot dog kit and some Sweet Hots pickles and peppers. The kit came with 10 “hot dogs” (actually smoked sausage), two cans of secret hot dog sauce, and two cans of chili. My original plan was to have friends over on the Saturday of Ryan’s birthday, but that was the weekend that I got hives and impetigo and Ryan had a head cold. Boo! We finally got around to eating it this weekend and had our friends Tim and Sharon and their kids over to share it (the kids had regular hot dogs with ketchup). The food was fantastic and tasted just like what we remembered. It was so hard to eat in moderation! We were so excited to eat it that we forgot to take a picture, so we found the one above on Google from someone who enjoyed it at one of the locations in Toledo.
