Holy cow, Ashleigh was MAD today. Not just mad, but furious! (side note, if you’ve been around her you know how much she hates doctors and being poked. Apparently they poked a little too much today.) She attempted to escape from her bed and even pulled out her pic line. Yikes! Good thing Dad was there to wrangle her in (Mom is home for a much needed break).
Let me fill you in on the happenings since the last post. Ashleigh nearly died two weekends ago (Memorial Day weekend) because of the virus CMV. She survived that and improved up through Wednesday or so, when she got another infection and her lungs started having problems. They had taken her off the diuretic and she started retaining fluid in her abdomen, around her lungs. Then her lungs started to bleed inside because of all the pressure (this is common for CF kids, and the doctors were surprised that she hasn’t started bleeding until now). The bleeding interfered with the trach and her breathing which caused her to panic, which made her breathe faster, but she couldn’t, so she’d panic more, and so on. This happened on Friday and Saturday. When we visited Ashleigh on Saturday she was in a lot of pain and they were able to increase the sedation and pain meds so that she could relax while they tried to make repairs. By Sunday she was better and was able to get some sleep.
Her lungs, which up to this point have been incredibly healthy, are now in a lot of trouble. The doctor said they look like they have buck shot. They are working on a course of action and should know its success by the end of the week.
And based on Ashleigh’s attitude today, it looks like she’s got a lot of fight left in her!
