All because of a virus

I just got off the phone with Mom, who was back at work making bread! She and Dad will go back to visit Ashleigh today when she gets off work after lunch.

While Ashleigh is still in PICU and her condition is about the same, there have been some improvements:

  • Her liver is still as perfect as always and now her liver chemistry numbers reflect that! The liver chemistry test results are finally back to normal.
  • All the other tests the doctors took over the last few weeks have all come back negative!
  • Her temperature was brought from 106 degrees down to 99 degrees (with Motrin, of all drugs!).
  • She is now awake, alert, and able to communicate! Since she is still on a ventilator she can’t talk so she points out letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper.

It turns out that nearly all of Ashleigh’s recent problems are directly related to the Epstein-Barr virus. The one potential good thing about this virus is that when some liver transplant patients recover from it they no longer need anti-rejection drugs. Any. Ever. I don’t know the medical term for it, but this is what we are hoping for in Ashleigh’s case; recovery from EBV in such a way that anti-rejection drugs are not needed.

I’ll keep posting as I hear more!
